My first baby, Jonathan, became suddenly ill at six months old, and ended up in the hospital with a rare pneumonia. After two months, he passed away. Doctors said he had a rare immunodeficiency disease, hyper IgM syndrome, which could occur again in later sons. Only monthly gamma globulin infusions could save their lives. It was such an unexpected chain of events which affected our lives for years! We had a large family of nine children. We, their parents, also wrestled with cancer and my husband had Alzheimer's before passing away.
Two more hyper-IgM sons died from cancer and neurodegeneration at ages 16 and 30. It broke our hearts! Without the gamma globulin, we would not have enjoyed their special personalities - sons who trained hawks, hiked in the mountains with friends and siblings, and played violin in orchestras.
